Micro weddings – Getting your wedding plans underway

If you’re thinking about planning a micro wedding or are hoping to work with a small Wedding Planner in the UK, than today’s blog will be the perfect read for you!

There’s no doubt that the recent government roadmap announcement has prompted many couples to revisit their original wedding plans. With so many of you already postponing your wedding once or twice, it’s no wonder planning a micro wedding, or a ‘marry now, party later’ option is becoming increasingly popular. Whilst I know it may feel disheartening, some of the micro weddings I’ve seen have been so beautiful and intimate and couples have still got married in style!

As a multi-award-winning UK Wedding Planner, one point I keep making to my couples is that good things come in small packages, and just because you choose to go a little smaller with your guest list, it doesn’t mean quality should be compromised.

In fact, for many couples, the budget savings of planning a smaller wedding have meant that they can bigger in some areas, increasing the number of courses at the wedding breakfast or planning wow-factor decor, for example.

If you’re considering planning a micro wedding, here are my top tips to help you get started.

The UK Wedding Planner Advice – Define the wedding guest list for your micro wedding

It’s safe to say that downscaling your plans and opting for a micro wedding may not always be the right choice. However, lots of my couples at One Curious Dream are considering a ‘marry now, party later’ approach and working in line with government guidance from last year, are planning weddings based on them being allowed 15 guests in attendance.

So, the starting point is to create your ‘must-have’ guest list and ensure the number of guests you compile is below 15. If there are people who you simply cannot imagine being married without them in attendance, then a micro wedding may not be the right option for you.

Establish the priorities for your micro wedding

When planning a smaller wedding, it’s important to prioritise the key elements that are important to you both. Lots of couples choose to lose some of the traditions surrounding a larger wedding (no first dance or cake cut, for example), so this may mean that your wedding budget can be more focused on your priority areas.

Start by writing a list of the five key elements that are non-negotiable – for example, enjoying fantastic food, planning incredible decor, or being able to accommodate all of your guests at the wedding venue. Understanding how you would like your micro wedding to look and feel may well enable you to embrace the experience and get excited for the planning stages! It also means your plans will begin on the right foot and ensure a smoother planning experience.

Choose your Micro Wedding Venue

Exercise caution here! Many traditional wedding venues will confirm that they are happy to host a micro wedding; however, there’s every possibility, depending on the venue size, that you and your guests could look a little lost in the space!

If the wedding venue generally hosts weddings for 100 plus people and you’re planning only to have 15, it’s essential to chat with the wedding venue to find out more about the best use of space. Do ask them how they manage micro weddings and ensure you communicate regularly as you plan your wedding.

Remember also, that even though you’re hosting a smaller micro wedding, you will still want to host your reception at a wedding venue where you create an amazing atmosphere and ambience. There are many incredible wedding venues out there who specialise in more intimate, smaller weddings, so they may well be a good starting point.

We’re incredibly spoilt across the UK with so many local wedding venues offering wedding packages for smaller weddings. As a multi-award-winning wedding planner, I have an amazing portfolio of micro wedding venues, so don’t be afraid to get in touch if you fancy tapping into my wedding venue knowledge!
