Postponing your wedding? Real bride tells all…

Wedding Planning Advice

As professional Wedding planners working across London & the East of England (Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge & Essex) we know it’s been a very difficult time for the wedding industry across the past few months. If you’re thinking of postponing your wedding, our hearts truly go out to you. Our Norwich-based wedding planning team have experienced the devastating impact of coronavirus first hand. Having moved all of our wedding planning and partial wedding planning wedding couples to 2021 and beyond, we’ve had a year so far without setting foot on-site at a wedding venue.

Regular Weddings by One Curious Dream blog readers will know we’ve already shared lots of wedding planning advice on how to postpone your wedding and have offered lots of tips to make the postponement process a little less stressful – you can read these on our wedding blog.

As tough as the past few months has been for our wedding planning team, wedding suppliers and wedding venues, it’s of course been especially challenging for couples who were due to get married this year. Today, we hear from real Weddings by one Curious Dream bride, Kat, who shares her experience of postponing her 2020 wedding.

“Having planned our marquee wedding since 2017, we were both so excited for our wedding day to arrive. I remember speaking to our Jo (One Curious Dream wedding planner) back in March before the lockdown kicked in about what we do if the situation developed.

This period was already starting to feel stressful, and whilst the One Curious Dream team were fantastic, it felt like we constantly had family members and friends asking about whether the wedding was going to go ahead which really dampened our excitement. Lots of our guests from abroad were already starting to pull out due to travel restrictions being implemented, and my mum had raised the point that my grandma might not be able to join us for the wedding day.

As always, Jo was incredibly supportive, and we chatted through the options for postponing our wedding in detail. It was so lovely to have somebody impartial to discuss our wedding with who was able to offer a viewpoint without the emotion attached! Something that Jo said resonated with us both in that the wedding planning journey is almost as important as the wedding day and did we really want to spend the next few weeks worrying about the wedding? The simple answer to this question was no – we wanted to enjoy the build-up without worrying about whether the wedding could even go ahead.

We agreed with Jo that now was the time to explore plan B options, just in case the worse should happen and our wedding needed to be postponed. Initially, we considered moving our wedding to later on in 2020, perhaps an August or September date, but Jo’s advice was that if we were going to take the plunge and move the wedding, we should allow ourselves more time.

We settled on a couple of spring dates in 2021 and Jo quickly set to work to discuss back up options with our suppliers. Fortunately, as our marquee wedding is being hosted at my parents home, we didn’t need to negotiate with a venue which was one blessing.

A week or so later, lockdown officially kicked in, and we agreed that this was the right time to get the backup plan in place. Jo contacted all of our suppliers and quickly and efficiently rearranged everything. We have over 30 suppliers across our wedding weekend, and we’re so happy that they have all been able to change to our new date.

We still feel a little bit sad that we have to wait another year until we get married, and there’s still some nervousness as to whether our wedding will be able to go ahead next year. By having Jo and her team by our side, we feel confident that if the worse should happen again, we’ll have the best support and people to help us make plan C work!

We’re still feeling a little raw from the experience of moving our wedding, but honestly, we’ve both said that we don’t know what we would have done without having Jo and the One Curious Dream team on board. They have been incredible wedding planners, and they’ve been amazing wedding postponers!

My fiance never initially saw the benefit of hiring a wedding planner but quickly changed his mind once we started planning our wedding with Jo and the team at One Curious Dream. Given everything that’s happened, he feels we wouldn’t have managed such a smooth transition without having One Curious Dream to manage the process.
We’re starting to feel a little excited again, and we know that this will return in abundance as the world gets back to normal. We can’t wait for our wedding which Jo assures us will be “bigger, bolder and more bad-ass than ever” ;-)”
