Wedding Planning Advice

If you’re looking for some wedding food ideas, then today’s blog straight out of the One Curious Dream archives will be the perfect read for you!

As a multi-award-winning Norfolk wedding planner, I’m seeing the shape of wedding dining vary dramatically. As much as there is something charming (and tasty!) about a traditional sit-down wedding breakfast, this year, more than ever before, my wedding planning couples are striving to break with tradition and are looking for ways to incorporate their own personality through creative catering options into their wedding day.

From street food trucks, bbq’s, sharing platters, picnics and quirky food stations (sushi or tacos, anybody?), we are seeing a huge transformation in the way food and drinks are celebrated throughout the wedding day with a bigger focus on relaxed dining in a sociable environment. Couples are keen to ensure that guests are able to socialise throughout the wedding breakfast, and are finding ways to encourage conversation and create an informal feel. There’s much more of an emphasis on wedding guests having fun and being able to truly immerse themselves into the wedding celebrations.

So far this year we have seen everything from an oyster bar, huge pans of paella, a late-night chilli cookout and of course, a wedding cake made entirely from pork pies! The key really is to pick the food you love and don’t ever be pressured into choosing between menu A or B if working with a more traditional venue – most chefs will be happy to tailor your menu to your requirements.

On the sweet side of things, you could try a doughnut wall, a popcorn station or even have locally made ice cream served from a beautiful vintage bike.

Of course, it isn’t just the food that is undergoing a transformation – presenting unusual drinks options is also key. From a beer wheelbarrow, tin baths and rustic/vintage drinks stations, there is an option to suit everybody.

With the resurgence of gin, lots of couples are opting for setting up their own mini gin palace (hoorah!) and if you want to compliment that with something more ballsy, our gent’s trolley is perfect to use for whisky and cigars.

The key really is to think about the food you love eating and find simple ways to weave that into your wedding day. Not only will you and your guests be thankful for something different – you’re likely to save a fortune too!

As a wedding planner working across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge & Essex, I like to consider wedding food ideas that are truly personal to the couple. With many of my clients having very loose travel themes running through their wedding, it’s simple to incorporate simple, unique ideas. One of my clients chose an Italian menu, full of sharing boards and antipasti as they got engaged in Italy. Another of my clients chose to have a fish and chip van because they had eaten fish and chips on the beach for their first date. So, it’s worth thinking about those special moments that you’ve already shared together and finding ways to weave these into your wedding food.
