If you’re newly engaged and just starting out on your wedding planning journey – congratulations! I’m sure these first few weeks will have passed by in a whirlwind of ring-flashing, endless questions (when’s the big day?/am I a bridesmaid?/have you chosen a venue?) as well as lots of discussions about your vision and what will make your wedding perfect.
For some couples, this is the point where they realise they would like some expert help or wedding planning advice to ensure they have a professionally planned, beautifully designed and flawlessly delivered wedding – step in the professional wedding planners! We might be a tiny bit biased, but hiring a UK wedding planner really can make life so much simpler for you – not only do we have an extensive portfolio of perfect venues and a little black book rammed full of trusted wedding suppliers, our main purpose is to support you throughout the wedding planning journey, take the stress away and actually enable you to enjoy the wedding planning process – YES, it IS possible!
Much like any industry, all UK wedding planners are not created equal, so before you part with your hard-earned cash, please do your research and ask these questions!
How long have you been in business?
Yep, starting with a proper boring one here! Whilst everybody has to start somewhere, working with an established, experienced wedding planner who knows how to professionally plan and design your wedding is key to ensuring you’re guided throughout the planning process in the right way. We’ve had several clients switch over to us who have taken a hit both mentally and financially for not doing their research, so make sure you know exactly what you are getting before signing up. An experienced wedding planner will offer a comprehensive contract which will clearly detail the services they are providing and at what cost – if something isn’t clear, ask!
Are these all real weddings?
Strange question BUT! There are plenty of wedding planners who have beautiful websites and social media feeds – however, on closer inspection, you’ll notice that lots of the glossy images of happy-looking couples are actually from styled or editorial shoots rather than real-life weddings. Some wedding planners won’t necessarily highlight this and it does create a bit of a false image of the style and volume of weddings they take care of! If in doubt, ask…
How many weddings have you planned and how many do you take care of annually?
We’re really fortunate to be incredibly busy at One Curious Dream and our small team of UK wedding planners and designers work with a large number of couples across the UK each year. It’s a privilege to be chosen by so many couples and we never take it for granted! However, we offer a truly bespoke, tailored service so we’ll never allow ourselves to be overstretched, ensuring that all of our couples receive the personal service they deserve.
Having an understanding of how many weddings your proposed planner has planned (make sure their style and size match the type of wedding you’re hoping to achieve) will indicate their level of relevant experience and will also give you an idea about their workload during the busy wedding season. It’s also worth taking a look at their most recent weddings as most planners aesthetic style will evolve and typically so will the weddings they plan and design.
Do you work alone or with a team?
At One Curious Dream, we have a small team of planners and designers which is great for you, because it means you get a mix of skills and expertise at various points throughout your wedding planning journey with us. For most of our weddings, there will be a single point of contact throughout the planning stages and your planner will generally be supported on-site by another member of our team when it comes to delivering your actual wedding. It means there are always at least two people in our team who have a clear overview of your wedding and ensures continuity should anything serious happen!
Are you a member of an industry wedding planning body?
Although not essential, choosing a member of a leading body such as the UKAWP means that your planner has been fully vetted. As members of the UKAWP, we provide documentation such as proof of the insurance we have in place to cover the work we undertake and it also means that there’s an external body to make a complaint too should something go wrong.
Do you accept commission or referral payments from wedding suppliers or venues?
Such an important question! So important, we’ve just written a blog piece on this, you can read it here. Did you know that some planners are paid by suppliers and venues to recommend them which means their fee to you will generally increase? As members of the UKAWP, we do not accept commission or referral payments from suppliers or venues so please do check with any planners what their policy is if they aren’t members of the UKAWP. Weddings are expensive enough, you definitely don’t need it to be costing more!
