It’s no surprise that at One Curious Dream we adore tipi weddings – perfectly suited to free-spirited couples who wish to have a relaxed, fun celebration, it’s no wonder we plan and design so many of them! Here are our top tips to get planning your tipi wedding off to a great start.
Create your guest list
Yes, we know, it sounds blindingly obvious but this is a step that so many couples miss! Your guest list will determine how many tipis are required so having a good understanding of guest numbers from the very beginning will enable you to allocate the appropriate budget to the tipi hire. Whilst tipis can be hired individually, the likelihood is that as well as some seating for eating, you will also want a bar, dance floor and perhaps a chill-out area so for larger weddings, you’re probably looking at 3 tipis as a minimum.
Think about the season
Lots of people don’t realise that tipis can be used all year round. In fact, a winter tipi wedding can be a thing of beauty – with lots of low lighting and indoor heating, you can create a stunningly romantic atmosphere. Many tipi providers offer indoor firepits that are beautiful and perfect for toasting marshmallows!
Select your site
Next step is to consider where you are going to host your wedding and set up the tipis. Whilst lots of couples will have their wedding take place on family land, many venues hire fields and outdoor grounds that will also work perfectly. Tipi companies will have a list of venues that they recommend as well so it’s also worth asking for their recommendations. Your tipi provider will advise that the ground needs to be relatively flat (slight slopes are fine) and that there is a good access for their vehicles to load and unload.
Building the picture
Now you have your venue and space, the next step is to make it work practically for holding your wedding. Depending on where you have chosen, it’s likely that you will need to install a generator and loos (lots of lovely posh options are available, don’t panic!) but also consider other practical elements too – for example, is there lighting outside? Your guests will need to find their way to loos, car parks etc so ensure they can see where they are going! Also, chat through your caterer’s requirements, they may well need a catering tent on the site somewhere in order to prepare your wedding feast!
Creating a floor plan is a really good idea and quite often your tipi provider will help with this. Choosing long tables over round will enable you to seat more guests and also think about whether you are going to have a top table or simply mingle with your wedding party. Having a clear idea of how much space you have will also help when you come to designing the look of your wedding.
Finally, think about your décor – what kind of atmosphere are you hoping to create? Big hanging foliage installations always give a ‘wow’ factor and top this with greenery laden tables for the win. The beauty of a tipi wedding is that you can keep it simple – less is always more!
