It’s no surprise that as tipi wedding planning experts, we adore tipi (also known as ‘teepee’) weddings – perfectly suited to free-spirited couples who wish to have a relaxed, fun celebration, it’s no wonder we plan and design so many of them! Here are our top tips for planning a tipi wedding.
Create your guest list
Yes, we know, it sounds blindingly obvious but this is a step that so many couples miss! Your guest list will determine how many tipis are required for your wedding so having a good understanding of guest numbers from the very beginning will enable you to allocate the appropriate budget to the tipi hire. Whilst tipis can be hired individually, the likelihood is that as well as some seating for eating, you will also want a bar, dance floor and perhaps a chill-out area so for larger weddings, you’re probably looking at 3 tipis as a minimum.
Think about the season
Lots of people don’t realise that tipi weddings can take place all year round. In fact, as a tipi wedding planner, we know that a winter tipi wedding can be a thing of beauty – with lots of low lighting and indoor heating, you can create a stunningly romantic atmosphere for your tipi wedding. Many tipi providers offer indoor firepits that are beautiful and perfect for toasting marshmallows!
Select your site
Next step is to consider where you are going to host your wedding and set up the tipis. Whilst lots of couples will have their tipi wedding hosted on family land, many venues hire fields and outdoor spaces that will also work perfectly. Tipi companies will have a list of venues that they recommend as well so it’s also worth asking for their recommendations. Of course, as tipi wedding planners, we also have a wide range of tipi wedding venues that we regularly work with across the UK. Your tipi provider will advise that the ground needs to be relatively flat (slight slopes are fine) and that there must be good access for their vehicles to load and unload.
Building the picture
Now you have chosen your tipi wedding venue, the next step is to ensure you have the correct facilities in place to hold an amazing tipi wedding – this is where a tipi wedding planner is worth their weight in gold! There’s so much more to consider when planning a tipi wedding so an expert wedding planner will help you plan your tipi wedding to perfection.
Depending on the venue you have chosen, it’s likely that you will need to hire a generator and loos (there’s lots of lovely posh options available, so don’t panic!) but you will also need to consider other practical elements too – for example, do you need lighting outside? Your guests will need to find their way to loos, the car parks etc so ensure they can see where they are going! Also, chat through your wedding caterer’s requirements in detail as they are likely to need need a catering tent and access to water in order to prepare your wedding feast.
Creating a floor plan is a really good idea and quite often your tipi provider will help with this. Choosing long tables over round will enable you to seat more guests and also think about whether you are going to have a top table or simply mingle with your wedding party. Having a clear idea of how much space you have will also help when you come to designing the decor for your tipi wedding.
Finally, think about your décor – what kind of atmosphere are you hoping to create? Big hanging foliage installations always give a ‘wow’ factor and top this with greenery laden tables for the win. The beauty of a tipi wedding is that you can keep it simple – less is always more!
