Well ladies, I’m sure you don’t need us to tell you that weddings cost a blooming fortune! Unless you are the daughter of an oligarch or a self-made millionaire, the chances are there isn’t an endless pot of money to pay for the big day. At One Curious Dream we love helping couples stretch their budget and get the most bang for their buck – here are our top tips to help you avoid breaking the bank.
Choose your date wisely
First of all, how important is it to you and your OH that your wedding takes place on a Saturday? Many venues offer a significant discount for choosing a weekday wedding and if it is out of the standard wedding season – even better. Of course, you will need to be super organised and give your guests plenty of notice so they can save holiday allowance and book time off work – a save the date card will solve this problem.
2. Get crafty
If you are handy with a hot glue gun and love a wander around Hobbycraft, taking a DIY approach could be for you. Making everything from your invitations, favours and centrepieces can save a fortune but beware! All too often we meet with couples who have overestimated their level of craft skills and have ended up scrapping the lot in frustration. Make sure you always build samples first to check it is feasible to bring your ideas to life.
3. Reuse and recycle
At One Curious Dream, we are recycling addicts! Why not reuse pieces from other weddings? Depending on your theme, local charity shops are a treasure trove waiting to be explored and also importantly, sites such as www.sellmywedding.co,uk, Ebay and Gumtree are full of items that other brides wish to sell and recoup some cash on.
4. Stay seasonal
If fresh flowers are an absolute must, speak with your florist about what is in season to avoid paying a premium for flowers being imported into the UK. Here’s a little secret though, (and don’t tell anybody!) – you can make incredible displays with flowers sourced from a supermarket. Gasp! Shock horror! Yes, really. You can see some of the lovely displays we have created for our beautiful couples here: XXXXXX. Many supermarkets now allow you to order flowers in advance but if you are not concerned about having a specific type of bloom, head to your local store and pick up what’s available. Of course, beautiful bouquets can always double up as table flowers as well – just pop them in a vase or jam jar and bob’s your uncle.
5. Beg, steal and borrow
Ok, well don’t steal but you get the idea! This is the one time in your life where you have free reign to call in all of the favours you can. Have an uncle with a lovely car? That’s transport sorted. Have a friend who’s a brilliant baker? That’s the cake done. Nanna good with the sewing machine? Hoorah – that’s bunting ticked off the list. You get the idea – most people love to help and play a small part in making your big day magical, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.
6. Sweet treats for all
Speaking of baking, the whole of the UK has gone barmy in the wake of The Great British Bake Off – this handily works in your favour! Create an incredible focus point in your dining space by including a dessert table and ask your friends and family to bring a beautiful homemade cake with them. Not only will this save you from forking out for a dessert course, a table of delicious treats always get the tastebuds going – yum!
7. Hire, hire, hire!
Now we would obviously say this – with our amazing collection of treasures and props for hire, we would always advocate the benefits of taking this route. Not only are you likely to save a fortune on buying everything new, you can rest assured that your house won’t be filled with clutter after the big day! Seriously, hiring in many cases will save a ton of cash and in this day and age, you can borrow anything from your props right through to your wedding dress.
As a last word on the subject, make sure you have fun! Your wedding isn’t about having an endless budget, it’s about making the most of the money you have to spend. Planning a wedding on a strict budget gives plenty of opportunities for you and your OH to spend time together leading up to the big day – enjoy it!
