How Long Does It Take to Plan a Wedding? The Ultimate Planning Timeline

One of the first questions couples ask me after getting engaged is, how long does it take to plan a wedding? With so much information online, it’s easy to feel like you should already have everything figured out.

The truth is, there’s no single answer. Every wedding is different, and timelines vary depending on your priorities, guest numbers, venue availability, and how much support you have. What matters most is understanding a realistic framework, so you can plan with confidence rather than pressure.

This guide walks you through a clear wedding planning timeline, helping you understand what typically happens when, and how to approach planning calmly and intentionally.

18–24 Months Before the Wedding

If you’re planning a larger celebration, a marquee wedding, or hoping for a popular venue or peak-season date, this is an ideal time to begin. At this stage, I always encourage couples to focus on the big picture rather than the details.

This is the time to:

  • Talk openly about what matters most to you both

  • Set a realistic budget

  • Create an initial guest list

  • Begin researching and booking your venue — if you’re dreaming of a marquee wedding, securing the right space early is especially important, as availability can be limited

  • Consider hiring a wedding planner early on — they can guide you through your first steps, help shortlist venues, and take the stress out of early decisions

Booking your venue early gives structure to everything that follows and often helps answer the question of how long does it take to plan a wedding in a practical sense. For marquee weddings, having your space locked in early also allows you to plan layout, style, and flow, ensuring your day feels seamless and personal.

12–18 Months Before the Wedding

Once your venue is secured, planning really begins to take shape. This is when I suggest building your core supplier team.

During this stage, you’ll want to:

  • Book key suppliers such as your photographer, caterer, and entertainment

  • Start thinking about the overall feel and style of your day

  • Refine your timeline and priorities with the help of your wedding planner if you haven’t already

9–12 Months Before the Wedding

This stage is all about refining your plans. The vision becomes clearer, and decisions start to feel more tangible.

You may find yourselves:

  • Sending save-the-dates

  • Finalising your guest list

  • Booking remaining suppliers

  • Beginning outfit and dress shopping

6–9 Months Before the Wedding

Now the focus shifts to detail and flow. This is where everything starts to come together.

You’ll likely be:

  • Finalising catering and drinks

  • Planning ceremony details

  • Confirming décor and styling choices

  • Thinking about guest accommodation and transport

3–6 Months Before the Wedding

As the day approaches, planning becomes more logistical. Communication and organisation are key here.

This is typically when you:

  • Send invitations

  • Finalise your order of the day

  • Confirm timings with suppliers

  • Arrange final fittings

Final Weeks Before the Wedding

In the final weeks, everything should already be in place. My goal for couples at this stage is calm, not chaos.

Final tasks usually include:

  • Confirming final guest numbers

  • Checking in with suppliers

  • Preparing personal items

  • Making final payments

When planning has been done thoughtfully, these last weeks can feel exciting and reassuring rather than rushed.
